Wembley is the main shopping centre within Brent - however a new independent survey of local residents has revealed that few people actually do their main shopping there.

As our plans are centred around a new thriving shopping street, we wanted to gauge public opinion towards the current shopping choice on Wembley High Road and to understand what people would like to see in the town centre in the future.

The polling company ComRes interviewed 1,000 Wembley residents between 4th and 9th June 2010 and found that:

  • 56% of Wembley residents rarely do their shopping locally

  • 42% 'rarely' or 'never' do their shopping in Wembley High Road at all, preferring to visit areas such as Brent Cross, Harrow and Ealing as well as Westfield and the West End

  • 89% believe new shops would improve the general appeal of Wembley town centre

  • 87% felt that new shops would boost the local economy

  • 82% think Wembley needs a new department store or large high street shop

  • 64% agreed that they would be less likely to travel by car to other shopping areas if Wembley had a department store or large high street store

  • 89% of residents shop elsewhere because there is better choice

  • 9 out of 10 residents shop elsewhere because there is better choice
"The survey results demonstrate the clear need for more shopping choice in Wembley and supports the planning policy of Brent Council to boost Wembley's appeal and make it a shopping destination in itself. We want to create a thriving new quarter with more than 30 shops, complementing the offer on Wembley High Road, attracting a range of high street favourites and independent shops."
Nick Shattock, Deputy Chief Executive
Quintain Estates & Development plc
"The regeneration of Wembley is hugely important for the Borough and it is great to see the transformation already taking shape. Our planning policy does seek attractive new shopping at Wembley and it is no surprise to me that the research confirms this desire from local people too."
Councillor Ann John OBE, Leader
London Borough of Brent
